Meet white kvass: a pale, cloudy fermented drink made with light barley and wheat malt. A refreshing little introduction to Eastern Europe’s long relationship with drinkable bread.
Made in Ukraine by Persha Pryvatna Brovarnya, or “First Private Brewery,” this Lvivskyi variety comes unfiltered and pasteurised, keeping its cloudy appearance and gentle malt character.
Lvivskyi means “of Lviv”a nod to the western Ukrainian city where Persha Pryvatna Brovarnya, the “First Private Brewery,” began as a family business in 2004.
In 2012, its story joined a much older one: the Radomyshl brewery, founded in 1886 by the Czech Albrecht brothers, who brought their brewing traditions to Ukraine.
Expect soft wheat bread notes, mild sweetness and a refreshing sour edge, with a little citrus character from orange-peel extract. Light malt and bubbles make this an easy companion for salty snacks—and a good starting point for anyone curious about kvass.
For Slavs, kvass belongs to the everyday memories: summer shopping trips, lunch at home, sitting outside with friends. The familiar pleasure of something cold, bready and slightly sour while the afternoon takes off.
For centuries, kvass refreshed soldiers, workers and families across Eastern Europe. Traditionally made by fermenting bread or malt, this sweet-sour drink travelled from household kitchens and military mess tables to the famous soviet summer street barrels.
New to the tradition? Grab a can and some sukhariki. Already know your kvass? You probably have an opinion ready. We respect this.
