Meet semechki, also affectionately called semki: roasted sunflower seeds eaten one at a time, usually while talking, agressivly.
These XXL seeds come roasted and salted, still in their shells. Expect a salty outer shell and a rich, nutty kernel with a toasted flavour and a little natural sweetness. Crack the shell, eat the kernel, put the empty shell aside (spit if pro) Repeat until somebody asks you to asks you to go out of stair well.
San Sanych launched in Ukraine in 2014, complete with an animated character introducing the brand on Ukrainian television. It belongs to Snack Production, the same snack family behind Flint sukhariki. Bread crunch and seed crunch, what else!
In Eastern Europe, sunflower seeds are part snack, part social ritual. Benches outside the apartment block, train journeys, football on television and long kitchen conversations. For many people, the familiar cracking sound is practically background music.
For newcomers, there is a small learning curve.
Your experienced Eastern European friend will finish twenty while you are still negotiating with the first shell.
Pair with cold kvass. Bring a *bowl for the shells. Somebody has to maintain civilisation.
*Instead of bowl make a cone from any time of paper i dont know why it became the semencki standard
