Original Russian language military history magazines published by DeAgostini in Moscow.

One battle. One magazine.

Thousands of years of people being spectacularly bad at getting along with their neighbours.

The series takes the reader through warfare from the ancient world to the 20th century. Instead of concentrating solely on Soviet or Russian history, the collection jumps across countries, empires and eras: ancient Egypt and Greece, Rome, Crusaders, Mongols, Ottomans, Napoleon, colonial warfare, the World Wars and modern conflicts.

Each issue concentrates on one particular battle or campaign, explaining what led to it, the opposing forces, commanders, weapons and equipment, how the fighting developed and why the battle mattered historically. Contemporary descriptions specifically mention detailed battlefield maps, equipment and commanders; library records describe the issues as heavily illustrated in colour.

That's what makes these particularly cool.

Open one issue and you're looking at Kadesh in the 13th century BC; another covers Waterloo; another Kursk; another Vietnam; another the Crusades. It's essentially a compact illustrated military-history library built one battle at a time.

Expect maps, battle diagrams, paintings and historical illustrations, photographs where appropriate, uniforms and equipment, portraits of commanders, orders of battle and Russian language historical text.

The normal issues contain 32 pages including the covers
