A proper piece of Imperial Russian history.

Struck in 1762, this silver rouble dates from the very first year of the reign of Catherine II — Catherine the Great. Her portrait dominates the obverse, while the reverse carries the crowned Imperial Russian double-headed eagle, denomination and date. 

The СПБ beneath Catherine identifies the St Petersburg Mint, while НК on the reverse represents mintmaster Nazar Kutuzov. 

What makes 1762 particularly interesting is the timing. Catherine seized the Russian throne that same year following the overthrow of her husband, Peter III.

This is therefore not simply an 18th century Catherine rouble, but coinage from the first year of her reign.

Almost three centuries of circulation and history have left their mark. The coin shows substantial overall wear, softened portrait and lettering, scratches and aged surface patina. It is offered exactly as photographed rather than as a high-grade numismatic example.
