Set of 2 Bill, 1 & 5 Jiao from the People's Republic of China, 1980.
Original Chinese 1 Jiao and 5 Jiao banknote set from the People’s Republic of China, dated 1980. These were small-denomination everyday notes, the kind of money that normally would have passed through millions of hands during the late Cold War and reform-era China, but these have never been touched before. Clear Crisp 1980 bills.
The designs are classic PRC statebank style: clean socialist layout, People’s Bank of China text, national emblem with Tiananmen, and ethnic national imagery representing the many peoples of China.
The 1 Jiao shows Gaoshan and Manchu men in traditional clothing, while the 5 Jiao shows Miao and Zhuang girls in ethnic dress.
This was the China of red banners, factory whistles, bicycles, ration era memory and the early opening up years not ancient imperial cash, but proper communist paper money from the period when the People’s Republic was changing fast but still looked very old school socialist.
A small but very displayable piece of Cold War China. These notes have that perfect communist era design language: national emblem, minority peoples, People’s Bank typography, and multi-language scripts on the reverse.
Not expensive, but very atmospheric. Great as a starter Chinese banknote set, Cold War collector piece, world-money filler, or little “People’s Republic pocket money” item for anyone into socialist history, Asian banknotes, Mao-era aesthetics, or 1980s China.
Text reads in short:
中国人民银行 (Zhōngguó rénmíng yínháng)
壹角 (Yī jiǎo)
1 1
ZHONGGUO RENMIN YINHANG
1 1980 1

With the minority of Goashan and Manchu pictured in both female and male front the texts are in: Manderin(Chinese), Mongolian, Tibetan, Uyghur(Central Asian Turkic) and Zhuang script.
Making this perhaps the most Far Eastern, East item available at Praporchik.
