Welcome to the monetary chaos early Russian Federation 1992.

These coins belong to the first generation of Russian Federation currency issued following the collapse of the Soviet Union in December 1991.

Gone were the hammer, sickle and СССР in their place appeared the double-headed eagle and the inscription БАНК РОССИИ / Bank of Russia.
The series is particularly fun because inflation can be seen happening almost in real time. Russia issued 1 and 5 Ruble coins, while the same 1992 series already required denominations of 10, 20 and 50 Rubles. Within only a few years, even these values would become practically insignificant.

The designs are wonderfully transitional: recognisably Russian, but from a country that had barely existed in its new form for a year.

Fun fact: The eagle appearing on these coins is the emblem of the Bank of Russia, rather than the modern state coat of arms of the Russian Federation.

Look closely and you'll notice that this early eagle has no crowns, sceptre or orb.

Each coin is an original circulated example from 1992.
