The Russia of the late 1990s needed some smaller numbers.
Following years of enormous post-Soviet inflation, Russia redenominated its currency in 1998 at 1,000 old Rubles to 1 new Ruble.
This new generation of coins had actually been dated from 1997, creating the basic Russian coin series that would remain familiar for decades.
The tiny kopecks feature Saint George on horseback spearing the dragon, continuing a Russian coin tradition stretching back centuries.
The Bank of Russia itself notes that the mounted spearman had appeared on Russian coinage since the monetary reforms of the 16th century.
The Ruble denominations instead carry the distinctive uncrowned double-headed eagle of the Bank of Russia.
Don't mistake it for Russia's national coat of arms: this was the emblem of the central bank.
Russia only replaced it on regular Ruble coins with the crowned state coat of arms beginning in 2016.
Two different Ruble designs
1997–2001 – Original design
The denomination — ОДИН РУБЛЬ, ДВА РУБЛЯ, etc. appears in a straight line beneath the eagle.
2002–2015 – Revised Bank of Russia design
БАНК РОССИИ curves underneath the eagle while the denomination runs around the upper part of the coin. The underlying coin design remained part of the same 1997 series.
There were also material changes during production.
For example, the 1 Ruble changed from copper-nickel alloy to nickel-plated steel in 2009, while 10 and 50 Kopecks changed from brass to clad steel during the series.
Please note: These are genuine circulated coins. Individual years, mint marks, coloration, scratches, patina and general wear will vary.
