CAMOUFLAGE FOR PEOPLE FIGHTING AN OIL CHANGE

This wonderfully strange Czech pattern belongs to the Vz.92 work uniform, issued for dirty jobs where soldiers had the irritating habit of getting grease, oil and grime all over themselves.

So Czech Genius came up with a solution:

Make the uniform look dirty BEFORE the soldier gets dirty.

Seriously.

The mottled Vz.92 pattern was intended to help disguise the stains accumulated during military work. Contemporary Czech surplus dealers still specifically describe its camouflage as particularly suitable for hiding oil and grease stains.

And underneath the weird pattern is actually a bloody good little work jacket.

You get two large pleated chest pockets, covered button closure, reinforced elbows, adjustable button cuffs, a partly elasticated waist and a Velcro panel on the chest for identification/rank.

It's lightweight enough to wear as a shirt-jacket but substantially more interesting than whatever €70 workwear jacket someone is currently trying to sell you on Instagram.

THE AWKWARD CHILD BETWEEN TWO ARMIES

Vz.92 is particularly fun historically because it sits right in the post-Cold-War transition period.

The pattern appeared around the end of Czechoslovakia and continued into the newly independent Czech military before the familiar woodland-style Vz.95 system took over as the Czech Army's defining camouflage. International surplus references consequently describse it as a particularly characteristic piece of early-1990s Czech military kit.
