Saigon on the radio.
Hoa Sen Saigon is a 17-track trip through Vietnamese voices, old broadcasts and female-led pop, moving between soft melancholy, psychedelic touches and the occasional interruption from history.
The album opens with a short 1955 Ho Chi Minh radio speech, before dropping into Vietnamese music from different eras. Somewhere along the way Hanoi Hannah cuts through the signal, then it's back to singers, guitars, strings and beautifully dramatic Vietnamese pop.
Plenty of female vocals, several appearances from Khánh Ly, and enough old-radio atmosphere to make the whole thing feel slightly like you found it playing through a dusty receiver in somebody's apartment.
Full-color jewel-case artwork, printed disc and a few small details hidden inside for people who actually open CDs instead of staring at Spotify.
