n original Russian bodybuilding and fitness magazine from the golden age of gloriously excessive 2000s gym culture.
Качай Мускулы was one of Russia's dedicated bodybuilding publications, covering the country's rapidly growing bodybuilding and fitness scene alongside international athletes. Contemporary descriptions of the magazine list its regular subjects as news, competitions, training, nutrition and health, while surviving articles include workout programmes and advice for building a home gym.
And visually, it is peak post Soviet gym culture.
Massive men. Tiny posing trunks. Questionable sunglasses. Protein advertisements. Training routines. Diet advice. Competition photography. Interviews and bodybuilding personalities. Everything printed with the loud graphic design that made early 2000s magazines so wonderfully unmistakable.
This wasn't simply a Russian translation of an American fitness magazine either. Качай Мускулы specifically covered the Russian domestic bodybuilding scene and worked with sporting federations. One documented 2005 issue had a circulation of 24,000 copies and the magazine was published ten times per year.
For its original audience, this was practical material: before Instagram coaches, YouTube tutorials and fitness TikTok, magazines were one of the main ways enthusiasts could get workout programmes, bodybuilding news, nutrition advice and photos of professional physiques.
Today it has become a fantastic little time capsule of the Russian fitness scene — equally suitable for bodybuilding collectors, Y2K enthusiasts, Russian-language ephemera collectors, gym-wall decoration, or anyone who simply appreciates an unreasonable quantity of bronzer or just a swollen guy in tight pants.
