Coat of arms flag of Republic of Ingushetiya, located northern Caucasus.
Ingushetiya, also known as the Republic of Ingushetia, is a Russian republic situated in the North Caucasus. It is part of the North Caucasian Federal District, and shares borders with Georgia to the south, North Ossetia–Alania to the west and north, and Chechnya to the east and northeast.
The capital, Magas, and the largest city, Nazran, make up the Republic's small 3,600 square km area. Formed on 4 June 1992 after the division of the Checheno-Ingush Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic into two parts, this is the smallest of Russia's non-city federal subjects.
The country is ruled by the original Ingush, a Nakh tribe. According to the 2021 Census, there are approximately 509,541 citizens.
The North Caucasus insurgency and ongoing corruption have led to significant instability and poverty in Ingushetia, making it one of the most volatile regions in Russia. While violence has decreased in recent years, neighboring Chechnya's conflict has occasionally spread to Ingushetia. In 2008, Human Rights Watch reported high levels of corruption, as well as numerous violent crimes committed by government security forces, protests against the government, attacks on military personnel, Russian military abuses, and a concerning human rights situation. Despite these challenges, Ingushetia boasts Russia's highest life expectancy of 80.52, outlasting second-place Dagestan by almost 4 years.
1832, the Russian Baron Rozen wrote a letter to Count Chernishev, reporting that he had "eliminated eight Ghalghaj (Ingush) villages on the 23rd of this month. On the 24th, I destroyed nine more villages near Targim." By 12 November 1836, he claimed that the highlanders of Dzheirkah, Kist, and Ghalghaj had been temporarily subdued. The rebellion led by Imam Shamil against Russia began in 1829. He took control of Dagestan and Chechnya before attacking Ingushetia in hopes of converting the Ingush people to Islam and gaining strategic allies. However, the Ingush people defeated Imam Shamil's forces. They successfully fought off two more attacks in 1858. Despite being locked in warfare with two powerful foes and their allies, the Ingush forces were eventually devastated. According to Russian officer Fedor Torn
The invasion of Ingush territory by Russian and Ossetian forces commenced during the 1800s. Russian General Evdokimov and Ossetian Colonel Kundukhov boastfully shared in 'Opis no. 436' that the colonization was a triumph.
World War II, in 1942 German forces entered the North Caucasus. For three weeks Germans captured over half of the North Caucasus. They were only stopped at two Chechen-Ingush cities: Malgobek and Ordzhonikidze (a.k.a. "Vladikavkaz") by heroic resistance of natives of Chechen-Ingush ASSR.
Stalin :On 23 February 1944, the people of Ingushetiya and Chechnya were falsely accused of coöperation with the nazi's and deported to Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Siberia in Operation Lentil, ordered by the infamous Soviet leader Joseph Stalin, while their men fought on the front. The initial phase of the deportation used American-supplied, specially-modified Studebaker trucks with three submachine gun compartments to prevent escapes.
