A Tajik banknote pairing a Soviet-era poet with the symbols of an independent republic. Dated 1999, this design belongs to the somoni currency introduced in 2000.
The front features Mirzo Tursunzoda (1911–1977), a Tajik poet and political figure, alongside a globe and a map of Tajikistan. The reverse shows the National Bank building in Dushanbe with the country’s flag.
The somoni replaced the short-lived Tajik ruble in October 2000 at a rate of 1 somoni to 1,000 rubles. Three zeros removed in one go. A productive day for whoever had to count the money.
Its design captures a country establishing its own monetary identity while retaining a familiar figure from its Soviet cultural past. Tajik Cyrillic appears alongside English lettering on the reverse.
Hold the note up to the light and Tursunzoda appears again in the portrait watermark.
Price is for one banknote.
