A little piece of the Silk Road, printed in red and light green. Uzbekistan’s 2021 2,000 soʻm note brings together ancient fortifications, caravan routes and archaeological finds from the Bukhara region.
The front features the Ark of Bukhara, the city’s historic fortress, alongside a map of Uzbekistan showing the old Silk Road caravan routes. Traditional honatlas textile patterns complete the design.
On the reverse are the ruins of Poykend, an ancient trading city on the caravan routes, together with a mural fragment from Varakhsha and an archaeological pottery find. A modern banknote giving considerably older history its turn in the spotlight.
Hold it up to the light and you’ll find a camel watermark beside the number 2000. Tilt it and the printed denomination changes from gold to green. The camel, unfortunately, remains the same colour.
An affordable addition to a Central Asian banknote collection, with plenty to look at on both sides.
Price is for one banknote.
